Sekhmet · Mistress of the Flame Empowerment — The Protection of Egypt’s Lioness Goddess, Invoked in the Words of Her Ancient Cult
Sekhmet · Mistress of the Flame Empowerment is a personal empowerment that dedicates your practice to Sekhmet, the Powerful One. She is the lioness goddess whose force Egypt feared and whose favour it sought, and who could embody the Eye of Ra. The aim of this empowerment is protection: that danger pass by, and that her fierce power be turned toward guarding life. You approach her with the very words Egypt addressed to her.
I personally transmit the empowerment at a distance. You receive it once, through the First Rite of Dedication, with only a bowl, a small vessel and cool water. With it comes the complete 27-page English manual: eight Egyptian recitations, the regular offering, two deepening practices and a glossary.
BENEFITS & VIRTUES
✦ Fierce Power Turned to Guard Life — The empowerment opens a living relationship with Sekhmet for one purpose above all: protection. You bring her your requests for protection or restoration, asking that her power keep harm from you and your household.
✦ Egypt’s Own Words of Power — You receive eight recitations in exact Egyptian transliteration. Each one comes with its pronunciation, its meaning and its ancient source: the Leiden papyrus, a lioness amulet, the Book of the Dead, the Amduat. You hail the goddess by titles attested in Egypt.
✦ Under the Sign of Life — Sekhmet holds the ankh, and Egyptian medicine counted her priest among those who examined the sick. The practice carries this ancient bond with healing into a devotional request for well-being.
✦ Protection at the Turning Points — The first deepening draws on the Leiden calendar petitions against the dangers of the year’s end. It seeks protection at your own thresholds: the close of a year, a change of responsibility.
✦ Renewal with the Returning Sun — The second deepening follows the sun god’s night journey through the Duat and greets his return at dawn: renewal in the language of Egyptian solar religion.
Most Sekhmet attunements speak about the goddess. This one speaks to her, in the opening address of Papyrus Leiden I 346, over cool water, as at Dakka.
TRADITIONAL VIRTUES OF SEKHMET · MISTRESS OF THE FLAME
✦ Protection — That danger pass by, and that fierce power be turned toward guarding life, as in the petitions of the Leiden calendar papyrus.
✦ Appeasement — The goddess is addressed by a name attested in Egypt and honoured with cool water. The offering gives form to the request for a favourable encounter.
✦ Renewal — Contemplation of the sun’s passage through the night and its return at dawn, a theme of Egyptian solar religion.
✦ Disciplined speech — Knowing what each formula means and who speaks it; asking for protection in clear words, and expressing gratitude with a definite act.
✦ Reverence for life — Recognising the sign of life in Sekhmet’s hand and her protective image on amulets. Her ancient associations with healing frame a devotional request for well-being.
TRADITION, LINEAGE & SYMBOLISM
In the Eighteenth Dynasty, Amenhotep III commissioned hundreds of statues of Sekhmet. Many are associated with his mortuary temple at Kom el-Heitan, and examples later stood in the precinct of Mut at Karnak. Their epithets read as a litany in stone, each invoking another aspect of the goddess for the king’s protection.
Papyrus Leiden I 346 preserves protective recitations for the year’s end and for the extra days that completed the civil calendar. It hails Sekhmet as Lady of Isheru, a name tied to the sacred lake of Mut’s precinct. It also appeals to divine authority to turn away the violence of her emissaries and their arrows.
In the Ebers Papyrus, her priest stands beside the physician: in Egypt, cult and medicine lived side by side. The First Rite of Dedication is my own arrangement of these attested forms for a private worshipper. The words are Egypt’s, and every recitation names the ancient setting in which it appears.
THE RITES AND THE EIGHT WORDS OF POWER
The practice has four movements: the First Rite of Dedication, performed once; the Regular Offering; Protection at a Turning Point; and The Night Journey and the Return of the Sun. Eight recitations carry them:
✦ A — Address to Sekhmet, from the opening of the Leiden papyrus
✦ B — Address to the Eye of Ra, Ruler of the Island of Flame
✦ C — Blessing of Life, from an inscribed lioness amulet
✦ D — Petition for the Turning of the Year, from the Leiden calendar
✦ E — Greeting the Rising Sun, Book of the Dead, chapter 15
✦ F — The Evening and Morning Barques, from the same sun hymn
✦ G — The Paths of the Duat, the fifth hour of the Amduat
✦ H — Yesterday and Tomorrow, Book of the Dead, chapter 17
