TRADITION, LINEAGE & SYMBOLISM

The practice belongs to the Tantric and Āgamic stream of Shaiva worship, in which a deity is approached through mantra, seed-syllable, gesture and offering. Its mantra is declared in the classical way: its seer is Brahmā and its metre is paṅkti, which marks it as revealed rather than invented. Within the root mantra itself, Bhairava is hailed as the protector of the devotee Ajāmala, as Lokeśvara, Lord of the worlds, and as Mahā-Bhairava, the great Bhairava.

He is never worshipped alone. His iconography shows him three-eyed, holding a golden vessel, a trident, a noose and a damaru in his four hands, with his consort Swarna Bhairavi seated upon his left lap, showering gold upon his devotees. Yet the tradition holds both ends of the teaching together. The attraction of gold is real, but it is the lower gate. The true gold is freedom.
