The Devī Khaḍgamālā Stotram is easy to find and hard to enter. The text circulates freely; what rarely travels with it is the way in the exact order, the exact sounds, the transmission that opens them. Here, the way travels too.

Śrī Khaḍgamālā is an empowerment of the Śrī Vidyā tradition of India, kept for one purpose: to set upon its bearer the garland of swords of the Goddess the cutting power that severs attachment and raises consciousness.

✦ THE TRADITION ✦

Śrī Vidyā, the auspicious wisdom, is the worship of the Great Mother as Lalitā Tripurasundarī through her geometric body, the Śrī Yantra (yantra, a sacred diagram). Khaḍga means sword; mālā means garland; a stotram is a hymn of praise. The Devī Khaḍgamālā Stotram is the hymn by which the garland is worn.

The hymn seals itself within the Vāmakeśvara Tantra, a Śrī Vidyā scripture set down by around the eleventh century, in the dialogue of Umā and Maheśvara. From the schools of Kashmir and South India the discipline travelled, past the eighteenth-century commentator Bhāskararāya, into the paramparās — the teacher-to-disciple chains that carry it today.

The Śrī Yantra is the ground of that worship: nine overlapping triangles casting forty-three points, a lotus of eight petals within one of sixteen, three circles, a square gate of three lines. At the centre stands the bindu, the point where Śiva and Śakti are one. The flat diagram is Mount Meru seen from above — nine terraces, and the bindu its peak.

The hymn names its own keepers in three streams: divyaugha, the divine; siddhaugha, the perfected; mānavaugha, the human — eight saints the manual dates from the late eleventh century to Shri Ramananda (1400–1476). The chain is counted, and the reciter greets it link by link before taking a place at its end.

Among the treasures of Śrī Vidyā, the Khaḍgamālā holds a singular rank: it performs the whole nine-enclosure worship of the Goddess as one garland of names, and the lineages hold it to be the highest worship offered to the Devī.

Its closing verses, the phalaśruti, tell that the one who remembers the garland holds the sword itself in hand, and that fear after fear falls away before it: upheaval of fire and wind, thieves, battle, the crossing of seas, hostile spirits. What is worn as a garland need never be drawn.

✦ The sword of the Goddess — the signature of this empowerment. Khaḍga is the cutting power that severs attachment: what binds the bearer loosens, thread by thread, and consciousness rises as the weight falls away. Every other fruit of the practice serves this one.

✦ Spiritual protection — the garland stands about the reciter in the circumstances its verses name: upheaval, theft, conflict, the crossing of waters, hostile presences. The verses attach this protection to remembrance itself: it is present wherever the bearer stands, from the moment the garland is called to mind.

✦ Black magic removal — abhicāra, the hostile working aimed at a person, is named among the very conditions in which the garland is to be remembered. What was sent against the bearer meets a ring of blades and comes apart before it lands.

✦ Ascent and subtle perception — the recitation climbs the nine āvaraṇa, the enclosures, from the manifest yoginī of the outer wall to her who keeps yoga in absolute secrecy at the bindu. Level by level, what is hidden opens to the practitioner.

✦ Connection to the lineage — three streams of masters are greeted by name at every full recitation. The practitioner does not borrow the hymn; the practitioner enters its chain, and sits where its saints once sat.

✦ The favour of the Great Mother — the whole rite is oriented toward one declared end: to please the Goddess and to obtain her sword. Bhukti and mukti, fullness within the world and freedom beyond it, are the paired fruit the tantras attach to that favour.
