In Java, when a child is born, a lamp is kept burning for seven nights, sometimes forty, at the place where the birth-cord is laid to rest. The four who arrived with the child are being welcomed. This teaching concerns them — and the person they have guarded since that first hour.

Jaga Diri Sedulur Batin is a kejawen empowerment of Java kept for one purpose: to guard a person by waking living relation with the four inner siblings born beside him, and with the True Teacher within.

✦ THE TRADITION ✦

Java calls its inner science ngelmu: knowledge not read but obtained by laku, a discipline undertaken and carried through. This ilmu belongs to that science at its fullest — the kejawen current, the Javanese way carried in the vessel of the Islamic inner sciences.

Jaga, to guard; diri, the self; sedulur, sibling; batin, inner. The name states the whole purpose in four words.

The meeting of the two streams is old and deliberate. The chain of dedication runs through Sunan Ampel and Sunan Kalijaga of the wali songo, the nine saints of Java; through the sultans of Demak, the first Islamic sultanate of the island; down to Sultan Agung of Mataram, who reigned from 1613 to 1645.

A second chain, the silsilah of the Science of Blessing, the named succession through which a transmission descends, runs from Abdul Qadir al-Jilani of twelfth-century Baghdad, through the nineteenth-century master Ahmad Khotib Syambas, to teachers of Pekalongan, Cirebon and Tegal in living memory. The manual records it whole.

In this teaching's world, nothing stands alone. The great world, alam kabir, and the small world of the person, alam saghir, answer one another. Beside every person stand four subtle siblings — white, red, yellow and black; water, fire, air and earth — with the soul as the fifth at the centre: sedulur papat kalimo pancer.

A knowledge of this kind is transmitted, not published. It passes from guru to disciple under a known chain; the deeper Blessing is taught only under a formal licence of instruction, in unbroken succession; and before any practice, al-Fātiḥah is sent to the ancestors whose names the manual records.

Among Java's disciplines this one is singular for its balance: olah raga, the work of movement, and olah batin, the work of the inner self, carried together, each filling what the other lacks. Every practice bends toward its motto: Memayu Hayuning Bawono, Ambrasto dhur Angkoro — toward the good of the world, against rapacity.

✦ AS THE LINEAGES TELL ✦

The lineages tell that the first of the Seven Movements — the discipline that opens this manual — was performed by Adam himself, at the moment the soul was breathed into him. For an age he had lain unable to rise.

Then he moved like the waves of the sea, seven times. At the seventh he sat up and stood, firmer than angel or jinn had ever stood, and from all the angels came a single word of joy.

The same telling traces the three-day fast that brackets the weton, the Javanese birthday, to a teaching of Gabriel, handed down at last by Sunan Kalijaga.

✦ Spiritual guardianship — the signature working of this ilmu. The four siblings, present since before the bearer's first breath, are brought into conscious relation and take their stations around the soul: what approaches with ill intent meets a guard that has known its charge from the beginning.

✦ Self-mastery — breath, movement and attention placed under one rule. The appetites, in their four colours, take their proper seats rather than the throne; the bearer stands at the centre as the fifth; and Makdum Sarpin, the shadow-sibling of the soul, is met and governed instead of feared.

✦ Inner strength — the gathering of what the teaching calls the Divine Power, the generator within, from which every practice draws its charge: a condensed reserve, tempered by the graded disciplines of the manual and directed when the moment asks for it.

✦ Inner guidance — living relation with the Guru Sejati, the True Teacher within. The practitioner learns to be counselled from inside, and the path stops depending on hearsay.

✦ Subtle perception — the opening of the door of hidden knowledge: keenness of feeling awakened in the fourth of the Seven Movements, stillness reached in the sixth, and the opening of the inner eye

✦ The aid of the hidden friends of God — the Rijalullah Gaib, unseen helpers who move through the world for the sake of those in need. The manual sets out their thirty-nine degrees, their directions and their days, so that a request finds them where they gather and misfortune is cast off.

✦ Ascent of the soul — makrifat, the knowledge of God, called here ilmu Kasempurnan, the science of perfection: the long road toward the insan kamil, the complete human being, the end for which all the rest exists.

✦ Force turned outward — the closing lessons of the curriculum, by which what has been gathered is turned to the good of others. The guard is raised for the bearer; its fruit is meant for the world.

✦ A GUARD THAT IS BORN, NOT BOUND ✦

Many protections offered to seekers rest on an attendant spirit — a khodam attached to the bearer, stronger than he is, and never truly his. The old schools of Java warn about that road. This teaching takes the other one: the guard it raises is native.

The siblings have walked with the bearer since before his first breath; the empowerment does not attach them, it wakes the relation. A guard that was never given cannot be taken away.

To this day, on the weton, the four siblings are remembered: red-and-white porridge set out for them, flowers given, a fast kept by the Javanese calendar. Details of this kind are not decoration. They are how a living lineage recognizes itself.
