Demak, the island's first Islamic sultanate, rose around 1475; in its wake the pesantren, the Quranic boarding schools whose evenings close in recitation, became keepers of the prayer-sciences.

From those schools the discipline traveled: through village teachers and family lines, across the archipelago, and in our own era outward from Indonesia itself, as certain ilmu began to be opened to students far beyond it. What passes is never the text alone but the ijazah — the authorization that gives a formula its standing.

Behind the practice lies the alam ghaib, the unseen world of Islamic cosmology, ordered and ranked. At its height stand the malaikat, the angels: beings of light who act only by divine leave. A khodam, from the Arabic khādim, servant, is a spirit set to attend a formula or its bearer.

Most khodam sciences bind a single attendant, cultivated over years. This ilmu is of another order. Its name reads word for word: the science of the serving host of angels — pasukan, a troop; malaikat, the angels. Not one guardian but a legion, held in reserve for the hour when danger is real.

✦ Nearness to the angelic order — recited with sincerity and faith, the prayer of the system draws the bearer closer to the unseen order it addresses, and deepens the devotional bond from which the whole working proceeds.

Most protective ilmu ask to be built: long recitation, patient cultivation, a guard raised stone by stone. This one asks almost nothing of its bearer in the ordinary hours. A single recitation of its Arabic prayer, once, in the moment of need — that is the whole usage the lineage sets down. What is kept simple is kept ready.

Before the pengijazahan, the rite of formal transmission, custom asks purification: a handful of salt dissolved in the bathing water, the body left to dry on its own when the bath is done. The scene is exact, and it is old — the seeker cleansed, the air finishing what the water began, before anything is received.
